Bento Boxes

I've been trying to be better about packing my lunches lately, and it occurred to me that having a set of bento boxes might make my life easier. I've looked around online and seen a lot of plastic ones, but it's hard to judge size and shape from online pictures. Does anyone have one they like?

For that matter, does anyone have any packing-lunch suggestions? I'd really like to be able to pack a week's worth in advance, as I tend to be only semi-functional in the morning...

  1. Carolyn has a nested Muji bento box she loves. Did a quick google search but couldn't find it. Muji's US online store is crashing on me currently.

What kinds of stuff are you planning for lunches? Things with set shapes or things that adapt themselves to the shape of the container?

  2. Not sure yet what I'll put in it -- I'm still hazy on the concept of how they work with hot foods. Do you microwave them? Parts of them? Should I just plan to eat cold food?

I've been toying with the idea of making batches of sushi periodically. I really miss the onigiri I used to get in Japan, but I just don't have the patience or time to make them at home. Sushi would fit well, and if I could find an onigiri mold, that might work ok. (The other problem there is that my rice cooker is enormous, and makes a minimum of four cups of rice)

Another idea was to have a set of pickles or banchan, or even more like tapas: something I could make at the beginning of the week and dish out. Those would adapt themselves to container shape pretty well.

  3. I just make a peanut butter sandwich in the morning. Hard to screw that up...
